Which Level II hood size do you need?
Oct 18, 2026
The Level II hood on our duty holster locks the pistol in place and is set by drawing it back over the slide when you reholster. Because it closes over the top of the pistol, the hood size you need depends on what sits on top of your slide.
It is about height, not whether you run an optic
The hood has to close over everything sitting on top of the pistol. A low-profile red dot generally clears the normal hood. A taller optic housing does not, and needs the large hood. If the hood cannot close over the optic, the holster will not work.
When you order, the hood size option offers Normal Hood Size for no optic or a normal-sized optic, and Large Hood Size for larger optics such as the Vortex Defender XL or AKRA.
Hammer-fired pistols
Some models go to the large hood automatically, so the hood clears the hammer whatever condition the pistol is carried in. We apply that where it is needed. You do not have to work it out yourself.
How the hood works
To draw, a forward and downward push of the thumb releases the hood, and strong springs snap it clear of the pistol. Other hood designs release sideways or rearward, which fights your firing grip. This one keeps your thumb clear of it. If the mechanism ever fails, the pistol can still be drawn.
The hood has minimal moving parts, with no spring-loaded balls or lubricated steel plates. It needs no oil or grease. Flush it with clean water if it gets dirty and let it dry.
